It would just be cheaper to build my own from scratch seeing as how I found this...

Kinja'd!!!

Because the M-416 is so versatile and coveted by off-roaders the prices on even a beat up rusty one are nearer the $2,000 range.

Kinja'd!!!

But they just fit so well with the Wranglers.

I was looking at one just like for my Sonoma for long trips but found a frame on Kijiji and just ended up building a cheap one for a total of $300. They do look good together though.

I've been reading up on trailer pros and cons lately and I've come to the conclusion that I don't want a trailer. If Im pulling something behind me its going to be big heavy and make my comfy, otherwise I can fit inside or do without. Here is the link to the book I referenced yesterday, there is some great trailering advice in there.

I was Leary about sharing the link directly but the back of the book says its free to distribute as you would like...so I just did.

For the type of trails that I do I would need / want the smaller, more versatile trailer. I would end up putting a Tepui roof top tent on the too which would be plenty spacious and comfy.

but the question is: do you need the trailer? I mean...how much stuff do you need to bring with you? Even pulling a small off-road trailer limits were you can go and increases wear and tear enormously. I figure if I need more space maybe my solution is less stuff.

Depends on the trip, how many days off road, etc. I would build out the trailer to have some cold storage and a recharging system, as well as a kitchen, so that way if I decide to go do an 8 day off road trip I can still eat. Plus it would allow for more fuel storage / water storage, etc.

I hear you. I guess the issue with the JK is that it never really had that great of Cargo Capacity to begin with so you are somewhat limited in how much weight you can safely carry, plus they are surprisingly small on the inside versus the outside. 892 lbs cargo capacity doesn't get you as far. I have 1620 lbs capacity and I still went overweight on the white rim trip. Granted we had gear for 7 guys, but still. Water is what kills you.
we were carrying 400 lbs of water alone.

Yea water and fuel will drag you down on weight. It's kind of a catch 22 too as the Jeep can tow more weight that it can payload (its rated for 1,100 on the 2014 4dr, or at least I saw that somewhere once...) but can tow up to 3500. The problem is, its so under-powered, pulling 3k behind you through the hills would either require a 5.xx gear or forced induction. So the upgrades have to come in phases, as some weight, add some power, add some weight, add some power. If only I could have my diesel I wouldnt have to worry about this.

I know these pains all too well. The 892 cargo was the specs listed for the Rubicon 4 door, they go all the way up to 1100 the more fun stuff you take off. As for underpowered, the cruiser weighs more and has less horse power (but more torque) than the 3.8 so I know your pain. I have 4.56 and 33's (vs 4.10 and 31.5 stock) and it handled my 3500 lbs popup pretty well over the mountain passes this last weekend. The other big problem with the JKU as a heavy touring vehicle is that the front suspension has no torsional stability, being setup to flex, so pulling a heavy load gets scary fast at freeway speeds. its a tough call indeed. The JKU will mop the floor with my 80 all day long crawling, but when it comes to heavy touring, the cruiser handles the weight better.

Yea and Im running 35"s on 3.73s right now... I have been trying to decide on a gear set but its tough. I'd love to run a 4.88 becasue it would help immensely off road, but its still my DD (and will continue to be as its 8 months of the dealer lot) and 4.88 would kill me on the highway.

yup, I went with 4.56 because its my DD too, and I did the numbers for 4.88 and I decided that would literally knock out my OD completely. Nope. note sure where you would be for revs with 4.88 but its was like 3200 at 80.
